have you ever wondered when you should
begin watering your lawn today I'm going
to give you a few thoughts on that and
also share a few thoughts on watering in
general so stay tuned
[Music]
if you're not receiving much rain in the
spring then watering can actually begin
right away as soon as you're not
receiving one inch of water per week on
the lawn as you get a little more
familiar with your lawn over time you're
going to start to notice the signs of
when it's looking dry and when it's
going to need water typically in the
spring and fall the temperatures are
going to be much lower so evaporation
rates are going to be much lower as well
so usually the soil holds on to moisture
a little bit easier in the spring in
fall because we don't have those hot
temperatures and the hot Sun taking away
all that moisture out of the soil but
what if it's springtime and you're
already noticing some drying of your
lawn let's take a look at my yard as an
example
[Music]
so I'm located in the Midwest where we
normally have much cooler temperatures
in the spring and fall and because of
this our soil is going to hold on to
that moisture a lot better however last
fall we were pretty dry in general where
I'm located and then although some of
you got a lot of snow this year we
didn't get a ton of snow of where I'm
located so that wasn't a whole lot of
moisture then going into spring here we
have not had a whole lot of rain to
start out the spring either so my grass
was starting to look a little bit rough
and you're gonna notice this especially
on areas that are near your concrete
sidewalks or your driveway or something
like that this is the area that warms up
the quickest because the Sun warms up
the concrete and then the soil is
sitting right next to that and then it's
gonna dry out the quickest so look at
these areas first see what the grass is
telling you as far as mine goes you can
see that the grass was beginning to wilt
in a few areas it's just overall looking
pretty stressed out and like it needs a
drink of water now to some extent we
want to stress the grass just a little
bit because we don't want the grass to
get watered day by day by day because
this is going to lead to a very shallow
root system so we want to stress it just
a little bit so that goes deeper into
the soil to look for the extra moisture
this is gonna create deeper roots and
this is just going to help the lawn
overall however once it starts to begin
this will - look or there's some really
dry spots in there that you can see
overall and this is a good time to begin
to water and also keep in mind as far as
our watering goes over all pay attention
to the weather forecast because if you
have some rain coming in the forecast
you know a few good chances at least I
know we can't trust the forecasts all
the time but if you have a few good
chances then kind of decide if maybe
rain is one or two days off then maybe
you could let the grass go but if it's
looking like it's three four five maybe
a week off before you're seeing much in
the forecast then that would probably be
the time that I would start to water so
that leads us to the question then of
how much should be water and you've
probably heard me at the beginning of
this video say we need one inch of water
on the lawn per week this is just an
average figure it doesn't have to be
exact but most people would probably
think okay well then if we need one inch
then I'm just going to put a small
amount on every single day of the week
and then that'll lead up to the one inch
and we'll be good but that would
actually be the wrong thing to do now be
something that a lot of people do where
they water every day for a small amount
and what that causes is very shallow
root system and the grass
the reason for this is that as you can
imagine if you're just getting watered
down into the soil a little bit every
single day and it's only going down just
a little bit then the grass roots only
have to go that little bit to get that
water they begin to be trained in that
way that the water is just going to be
sitting near the surface and they don't
go any deeper into the soil to look for
water so we want to water deeply and
infrequently what that means then is
that you can either spread it out maybe
two times a week or even better if you
can and it's a cooler part of the year I
would like to do closer to that one inch
of water in one watering and then do it
infrequently so that would be once a
week now in the summertime when it gets
really hot it's kind of hard to follow
this rule just because of the
evaporation rates so sometimes you need
to break that up into multiple days over
the week and go maybe a half inch and
then a half inch again are a little bit
more than that it just depends on your
specific climate and how hot it is and
things like that but watering
infrequently and deeply is going to
train those grass roots that as soon as
they don't have the water at the surface
they're going to go deeper into the soil
to try to find it that's naturally how
it works and it's actually a great way
to improve your lawn overall is by
proper irrigation
[Music]
so that's a little bit about one to
start watering your lawn and what signs
to look for when it begins to get dry
and also a little bit about watering in
general so if you have any questions
about anything please let me know in the
comment section below maybe check out
another video on my channel and thanks
so much for watching we'll see you next
